The Office of Education Through Employment Pathways (ETEP), an office of the Deputy Mayor for Education, is focused on ensuring that DC youth and adults have access to data-informed education and workforce programming and supports that provide the skills and experience necessary for economic mobility and prosperity.
ETEP’s recent publication, Pathways to Opportunity: Alignment between University of the District of Columbia Programming and Labor Market Demand, examines two key areas:
- The extent to which University of the District of Columbia (UDC) program offerings and enrollment trends align with high-wage, high-demand jobs in the region.
- Areas where DC anticipates significant labor market demand but UDC does not currently offer programming.
Key Findings:
- More than 80% of UDC bachelor’s degree students are enrolled in programs that lead to living-wage jobs in the region.
- Marketing, communications, and aerospace engineering were identified as potential new bachelor’s programs UDC could offer.
- At the associate’s degree level, only one of 22 programs is overproducing talent, while fewer than one in five students are enrolled in a program currently associated with a living-wage job in the region.
- The analysis suggests an opportunity for UDC to expand enrollment in computer science, information technology, and aviation technology programs at the associate’s degree level.
