On September 5, 2024 the DC education community came together for a meaningful event that underscores the power of collaboration. The State Board of Education (SBOE) hosted a literacy mixer for teachers at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library. Washington Teachers’ Union and DC Public Schools, both members of the DC Education Research Collaborative, along with the DC Charter School Alliance, partnered in support of the event, which drew over 80 kindergarten teachers.
The event provided an opportunity for educators to engage directly with leaders about the new literacy legislation set to transform early childhood education in DC. The new investments include professional development opportunities, compensation for training outside work hours, and a pilot program pairing teachers with literacy coaches. All kindergarten teachers will complete structured literacy training by 2026. Allister Chang, Ward 2 representative to the State Board, highlighted how these new investments will help better equip students with critical reading skills, ultimately setting them up for long-term success.
The mixer brought together educators, administrators, and policymakers, all working toward the shared goal of ensuring every child in DC has access to high-quality literacy education. It’s an exciting time for public education in DC, and shows these Collaborative members’ commitment to supporting the city’s goals by engaging the entire education ecosystem for the benefit of DC students and families.
